How can i get my gamecube controller port to work?

i was trying to play pikmin, i know that the first controller port doesn't work, but the game will not recognize a controller in the second. i was wondering how to get the first port to work or make the game think there is a controller in the first one, or make it so that you can only play with a controller in the second. How can i get my gamecube controller port to work?
are you using a third party controller or a Nintendo one ? The port could be ';burnt'; to the third party controller. Sony had this problem with the PS1 and 2 with controllers and memory cards.

Exchange it for a used one and just say that it skips playing the newer games. How can i get my gamecube controller port to work?
There really is no way to tell what the problem is. Controller type could be an issue. If the first slot is broken, I would highly suggest getting it fixed.

Oh, and Pikmin can only be played off the first controller slot ; )
just get it fixed it wont cost that much or nothing if you've got a guarantee
